Abstract:

Primarily views of the arctic cruise of the revenue steamer Bear in 1886. Contains views of whaling ships, native dwellings and villages, sled dogs, snapshots and portraits of native people (including children), native costumes, totem poles, graveyards, group portraits of ship and expeditions crews (the Greeley expedition, Oscar Hamlet, etc.), Russian churches, etc. Locations include: the Bering Sea (including George Island), Ounalaska (Aleutian Islands), Russian Siberia, St. Michaels, Hatham Inlet (Arctic Ocean), Unga Village, Point Hope, Kotzebue Island, King Island, Sitka, and others. One image may relate to a 1906 rescue made by Capt. Hamlet's son, Harry Gabriel Hamlet, who sailed on multiple voyages of the Bear around 1900.
